Punjab Vigilance booked former minister Bharat Bhushan ‘Ashu’ only to harass him: HC

Chandigarh: In a major setback to the Punjab government, the Punjab and Haryana high court has held that the FIR registered by the State Vigilance Bureau (SVB) Punjab against former Punjab minister, Bharat Bhushan Ashu and three others for corruption in the foodgrain transportation scam was “just to harass them”.

In its detailed order released on Friday evening, Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu has also quashed the FIR No. 11 registered on August 16, 2022, under Sections 120-B, 409, 420, 467, 468 & 471 of IPC and other charges under Prevention of Corruption Act at Police Station, Vigilance Bureau, district Ludhiana. The FIR was registered against former minister Bharat Bhushan alias Ashu, Sukhwinder Singh Gill, Harveen Kaur and Paramjit Chechi.

HC also held that the FIR in this case against Ashu and others was misuse of powers by the Bureau, for reasons which are unknown to law.
